The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania- North Eastern Diocese (ELCT-NED) invites suitable qualified Tanzanians to apply for position of General Secretary.

 POSITION: General Secretary (O1) POST

Introduction

On the 19th of June 1963, the Usambara - Digo Church and six other Lutheran Churches decided to unite and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) was formed. Today, the North Eastern Diocese is one among the 20 Dioceses within the ELCT. North Eastern Diocese is named so because it is located in the North Eastern part of Tanzania in Tanga Region. Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania North Eastern Diocese (herein referred to as ELCT-NED) is therefore is a faith-based organization registered in 19th June 1963 with Headquarter offices at Lushoto District in Tanga Region.

 The ELCT-NED operate under a mission that it is a Diocese committed to teach and preach the word of God and provide excellent spiritual, physical, mental, economic and social services to human being. In line with the said mission, the vision of the ELCT-NED is the church that serves God through great commission and sustainable holistic development to people.

The General Secretary Position

Being a registered institution and in furtherance of the mission and vision of the ELCT-NED wishes to recruit to an ideal candidate in the post of the General Secretary. This is a full time position whose responsibilities are as follows;

  • Becoming the chief administrative and accounting officer of the ELCT- NED.
  • Exercise responsible financial stewardship, ensuring that the ELCT-NED’s financial and property resources are managed in accordance with internal regulatory and policy requirements and external regulatory and statutory obligations.
  • Exercise and oversee good governance practices by ensuring that the ELCT-NED and her institutions comply with the internal instruments, statutory and other regulatory requirements and maintains complete and accurate records as required.
  • Provide leadership in risk management (including reputational risk) and crisis avoidance and management.
  • Employ and or appoint staff and assign them to appropriate Directorates/Departments/Sections together with developing and encouraging a supportive, productive and creative work place culture within the ELCT-NED and her institutions.
  • Ensuring that the ELCT-NED is appropriately represented for purposes of ensuring development and existence of mutual and strategic partnership with the government, relevant religious and international entities and any other entity whose functions/objects are relevant to those of the ELCT-NED and her institutions.
  • Support the functioning of the Executive Committee of the Council, the Council and the General Assembly and this includes preparations of the agenda and other relevant preparations in collaboration with Chairman of the mentioned organs and other relevant officials of the ELCT-NED.
  • Prepare and present the budget and other relevant or needed reports to the Executive Committee of the Council, the Council and the General Assembly.
  • Oversee the functioning of all institutions (including the Parishes), projects and programmes through relevant directorates of the ELCT-NED.
  • And any other duties that may be assigned to him by the Office of the Bishop, the Executive Committee of the Council, the Council and the General Assembly.

 Required Qualifications and experiences for the Post

  • Proven follower of the Lutheran Church and of highest standards of morals.
  • To be of not less than forty years (40) at the time of application.
  • Have a minimum standard education of Master’s degree in the fields of Business Administration, Commerce, Finance and Accounting, Public Administration, Economics, Planning, Development Studies and other courses relevant to the mentioned ones.
  • Excellent communications skills, able to present confidently about the ELCT-NED.
  • Proven good administrative background and practical knowledge on his/her field of study and who reached a high position within his/her own department, being professionally independent. He/she should be (preferably but not necessarily) the head of the department.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Prior experience of working with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania and or her institutions.
  • Experience in working with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and international entities directly or through projects etc.

Term of office

The  General Secretary is appointed for a four-year term which are renewable depending on the performance and recommendations and the decisions of the Council.
